Where is ‘Palestine’?

October 7th, 2009
Obama is misleading the world.
Published: 09/25/09,
On Wednesday, President Barack Obama addressed the United Nations General Assembly on the subject of the conflict between Arabs and Jews.
He had this to say: “I will also continue to seek a just and lasting peace between Israel, Palestine, and the Arab world.”

What is noteworthy here is that he referred to “Palestine” as if it were a state already. Is that not pre-judging the outcome? He also wants there to be peace with the “Arab world”, which means more pressure on Israel to cave in to the demands of Syria.

Palestinians have strengthened their efforts on security. Israelis have facilitated greater freedom of movement for the Palestinians. As a result of these efforts on both sides, the economy in the West Bank has begun to grow. But more progress is needed. We continue to call on Palestinians to end incitement against Israel, and we continue to emphasize that America does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements.

Obama appears to be signing on to Binyamin Netanyahu’s ideas regarding building the economy as a means to peace. But to my mind, by rejecting the “legitimacy of the settlements” he is declaring war on Israel.

The settlements are legitimate and legal. By taking such a position with no, or spurious, legal reasoning, Obama is no better than Judge Goldstone, who held that Israel was guilty of war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity. Nether the position of Obama nor that of Goldstone have any legitimacy. They are imposing on Israel an interpretation of law which favours the outcome they desire. Once again, Obama has prejudged the outcome of negotiations. If the settlements are illegal, as he says, then Israel must agree to withdraw from all lands east of the Green Line. He made no distinction with respect to Jerusalem. Yet, the US has long maintained the position that no one should do anything to prejudge the outcome.

Most presidents have shied away from saying that the settlements were illegal and contented themselves with declaring them “obstacles to peace”. This, also, is a debatable issue.

The time has come – the time has come to re-launch negotiations without preconditions that address the permanent status issues: security for Israelis and Palestinians, borders, refugees, and Jerusalem. And the goal is clear: Two states living side by side in peace and security – a Jewish state of Israel, with true security for all Israelis; and a viable, independent Palestinian state with contiguous territory that ends the occupation that began in 1967, and realizes the potential of the Palestinian people. (Applause.)

CLEARWATER – Lamenting that they had no choice, the board of Tampa Bay Water agreed today to fix its cracked, flawed reservoir in southern Hillsborough County.

Fixing the 15 billion gallon reservoir that is the lynchpin for water supplies in the dry season will take five years, possibly cost $125 million and likely add to residents’ water bills.

The board of Tampa Bay Water agreed with the recommendations of its staff on steps to fix the cracked C.W. “Bill” Young Regional Reservoir and the selection process for a company to do the work.

Selecting the design and the contractor is expected to take three years. The repairs would take another two years once work begins, putting the reservoir out of service for two dry seasons.

A rough estimate of the cost is $125 million, but the utility board members won’t know the true price until they open bids in three years.

The reservoir cost $147 million to build. In addition, the utility spent $4.1 million filling the cracks with grout and searching for their cause. This year, $325,000 is budgeted for filling the cracks but the cost may reach $1 million.

Tampa Bay Water has filed a federal lawsuit against the engineering company that designed the reservoir, the contractor and the firm that supervised construction to pay for the repairs.

Any money recovered from the suit will go to defray the repair cost. Residents in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Tampa, St. Petersburg and New Port Richey would make up the balance through increases in their water bills, the increase would be $1.30 monthly for each resident.

China marked the 30th anniversary of the start of its capitalist revolution with a speech Thursday from Communist Party leader Hu Jintao, who urged continued economic reform but said it would not lead to Western-style democracy. He praised the economic changes of the last three decades, including opening the door to free market reforms and foreign trade, which have brought a massive transformation to the country.

The event at the Great Hall of the People — the seat of the country’s legislature in the heart of the Chinese capital — was attended by more than 6,000 party leaders, legislators and military officials, who politely applauded throughout Hu’s remarks.

History!

December 16th, 2008

YouTube Preview ImageHistory has been made. The first African-American to be elected president of the United States. What an achievment for Barack Obama. What an achievment for African-Americans across the United States. What an achievment for the world. What a mess for President Obama to clean up. Can he do it? Of course he can. President Obama was the most level-headed, cool, calm and collected candidate on the ballot since day 1 of the campaign season. I feel there was no better choice for president. Michelle Obama and daughters have a lot to be proud of. Things are horrible in the United States right now but they could even be worse. President Obama will have to work many hours, days, months and years to even begin fixing the problems we face today. But he can do it, I have faith in him. I don’t believe all the hype about President Obama being associated with radical Muslims or having anything to do with Illinois Governer Blagojevich. President Obama has been the target of criticism from square one. People have tried to test him. People have tried to put him down. People have tried to ruin his career as Senator and potential President. President Obama has overcome many obstacles that were in his way. He has overcome much worse obstacles than other candidates. He has beaten the odds. President Obama is truly a great American with great ambition and love for his country. Let’s all rise up and support our newly elected president. Let’s do our part to help this country get back to the way things were. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!

This file photo dated 1968 shows former US President George Bush, then a US Congressman from Houston, as he pins bars on his son George W. Bush, representing his entry as 2nd Lieutenant into the Texas Air National Guard. US President George W. Bush on 10 February 2004, sought to quiet an election-year controversy by releasing pay and service records that aides said proved he met his military duties at the height of the Vietnam War. “These records verify that he met the requirements necessary to fulfill his duties,” Bush spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters at a televised briefing, repeatedly waving the documents for emphasis.     AFP PHOTO
